As Thanksgiving break approaches, the question of whether coronavirus cases will go up lingers in the back of people’s minds. Not to mention the holidays in December and January, which tend to be longer and more than likely people will go out and celebrate.
Since October, coronavirus cases have slowly been increasing. Still, it is expected to be less severe, with an expectation of a low death toll due to 76% of Californians have received at least the first dose of the COVID vaccine. These predictions do not include the booster shots that may further improve immune system resistance to the COVID virus.
From what doctors and epidemiologists have observed with the coronavirus, COVID follows a seasonal pattern similar to the flu. Some traditions have had to change to stay safe and protect others from COVID-19. It is recommended to keep cautious as the winter months approach, and the festivities take place. Soar student Amberlee Cocoletzal, a freshman, says, “Every year we’d go out of state, now we video chat while opening presents which makes me a bit sad.” On the other hand, Cicily Chavez, a junior attending SOAR High School, says, “My winter vacation looks the same with me using up the time to stay home and relax with my family.” The virus is still in effect, and as more precautions and ways to stay safe are announced, it is essential to consider the recommendations before planning out the holidays.
