SOAR High School has a new, but not so new teacher this year! Mrs Jefferson returns to the SOAR Stars campus after a year at Virtual Academy just in time to celebrate her 20th year as a teacher.
She originally came to SOAR in 2012 and was hired by the school’s original principal, Mr. Michael Dutton. Previously, she taught in the English department and was most recently an AVID 4, ERWC, Journalism, and Yearbook teacher. Now, she returns as the newest history teacher.
When asked about her return, Mrs. Jefferson replied she missed SOAR and its students. A bonus this year is that her own daughter, Juliet, is now a freshman at the campus she grew up coming to.
“It’s a cool experience being at the school with her,” said said, adding that Juliet has been a part of SOAR since she was three years old.
An interesting fact about Mrs. Jefferson is that she did not originally want to be a teacher. Instead, she majored in journalism at California State University, Northridge and worked as a newspaper reporter. She worked for both the Antelope Valley Press and Ventura County Star before deciding to become a teacher.
“When I was a reporter I was covering the education beat and it looked like teachers were having a lot of fun in their classes. That’s when I decided to switch careers,” she said.
This year she is teaching Civics, Economics, Contemporary Issues, AVID 4, Yearbook, and Journalism in T600-E.
She absolutely loves being the Yearbook and Journalism advisor. She started SOAR’s Journalism program in 2012 as a club and was lucky enough to get it approved as an A-G elective on the SOAR campus a couple of years later. She took over as the yearbook advisor when Ms. Reid left in 2015 because of her background as a journalist and because she truly believes in the program. She is currently the advisor for Yearbook and Journalism, Class of 2027, Junior Statesmen of America, and a new club supporting the American Cancer Society.
We are so happy to have you back Mrs Jefferson, and can not wait to spend the rest of the year with you!
History is my favorite subject! Welcome back Mrs. Jefferson!
