Take Care of Your Heart

By Isabella Rodriguez

Do you take care of your heart? Probably not the way you're thinking. I know with it being February all you're thinking about is Valentines day. However, February is actually American Heart Month. This month we prioritize the health of your heart, even though you should be taking care of your heart every day of the year.

This month take the time to come up with some heart healthy things you can do for yourself. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United states. This is one of the many reasons why you should live heart healthily. You have to understand the risk to take action against it. By making healthy choices you can reduce your chances of heart disease. Not only can you improve your heart health you will improve your overall health too!

You know the basics: eating healthy, drinking water, and so much more. Now I know it's not easy to cut your favorites out of your diet. However many students here at SOAR are doing some good for their heart without even knowing it. When on your breaks you might be playing volleyball, soccer, or taking a stroll around SOAR lawn. All these things are helping you get a bit of exercise in between our busy schedules. Some students have stated that they get regular exercise at the gym and others say they participate in a club sport like soccer or volleyball. Exercise is an overall great way to help your heart!

Now think how many hours of sleep did you get last night? Probably not enough. Did you know that 13-18 year olds need at least 8-10 hours of sleep. When you don't sleep enough you raise your risk for chronic health problems. You can sleep better by keeping your room quiet, cool, and dark. Maybe even try giving yourself a bed time and a specific time to wake up. This month make the change for the better and start living a heart healthy lifestyle!
