Steve Harwell's tragic death

Updated: Feb 5

By Kendall Raposas

“I don't believe anyone's selling out. I got into this business to entertain and, of course, make a living from it, and to be able to have our music heard in whatever way.” This quote is from Steve Harwell, the lead singer for the pop-punk band Smash Mouth. He was born on January 9, 1967. You may know his band for their songs, ‘All Stars’ and ‘I’m a Believer.” He sang for Smash Mouth for 27 years but retired in 2021 due to being diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a disease that makes it harder for the heart to pump blood through the body. As a result of this, the newest lead singer, Zach Goode joined on March 1, 2022. The band formed in 1994 and was named after Mike Ditka's term “smash mouth football”.

Steve tragically died on September 4, 2023 by acute liver failure at the age of fifty six. His manager came out and stated that the only people who were in the hospital with Steve were his closest family including his fiance. His bandmates came out and stated how they never got to say goodbye to Harwell.

Fans were also devastated by the singer's death. One of his fans took to twitter and stated..

“Sad to hear about the death of Steve Harwell due to liver failure. Prayers for him and his family and friends.”

All fans of Smash Mouth were deeply saddened and wished the family the best and have been helping them get through it.

The official Smash Mouth twitter page came out and stated..

“Steve Harwell was a true American Original. A larger than life character who shot up into the sky like a Roman candle. Steve will be remembered for his unwavering focus and impassioned determination to reach the heights of pop stardom.

Rest in peace knowing you aimed for the stars, and magically hit your target. Rest easy.”

One of Harwell’s biggest achievements was being nominated for the Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or A Group for his song ‘All Stars.’ He really enjoyed playing and having a part in music.

A family member was interviewed and stated this about Harwell…

“Everyone wants to remember him for being the funny guy with a heart of gold and an amazing entertainer. He had his vices and thankfully he doesn't have to worry and worry others about his well-being, The last couple days were more positive than anything else, which Steve appreciated. Tears and smiles have an interesting way to heal, and everyone that was close to him is now healing.”

The family also stated that it was going to be difficult to let go and had to,unfortunately, prepare themselves for his death.

‘His only tools were his irrepressible charm and charisma, his fearlessly reckless ambition, and his king-size cojones. Steve lived a 100 percent full-throttle life. Burning brightly across the universe before burning out.'

The family loved Harwell and how he was. His personality was reckless and charming. They wanted people to remember him as a funny and an amazing performer.

Steve Harwell is loved as an artist, loved as a son, as a brother, as a husband, and as a father.
