Preparing for Prom

Updated: Feb 6

By Morgan Carter

Prom is rapidly approaching and I want to share a few tips and tricks for shopping, planning, and saving money when you can. Here are five tips on how to prepare for prom without the stress.

  1. Have an idea of what you want when you go shopping.

    1. Dress or outfit shopping in general can be extremely overwhelming so having an idea of the color, style, fit and overall vibe of the dress that you are looking for can really reduce any stress that you have around shopping as it will help narrow down your options.

  2. Shop at places that are within your budget.

    1. It is very easy to quickly exceed your budget when it comes to prom shopping so it is important that you shop at places that are not over priced so that you don’t fall in love with an outfit or item that you can’t afford and end up over spending. Places like Windsor, Macy’s, & JC Penny’s all have reasonably priced items to complete your prom look. Even utilizing jewelry from your mom, aunts, or sisters can be helpful when you are trying to save money and could even mean that you end up with a more unique look in the end.

  3. Make appointments in advance.

    1. Making hair, nail, makeup, and wax appointments in advance can relieve any more stress that you have surrounding prom knowing that you already have the appointments made even if you don’t already know what you want. Especially because the Antelope Valley is so small and prom season is happening for almost every high school around the same time; there are only so many places for us to get our appointments done. The last thing you want is to be forced to book an appointment with a hair stylist, makeup artist, or nail tech that you have never gone to before because your typical technician is booked.

  4. Coordinate plans with friends beforehand.

    1. To help relieve some of the stress of the day of prom it is important that if you plan to attend a send off or meet up with friends before prom that you have coordinated a time and place and have anything you might want or need with you like a camera or new lipstick for example. This way you can plan to be on time because the last thing you want is for people to be waiting on you.

  5. Plan to be ready earlier than you need to be.

    1. Really, this list is all about planning. It is so important that you overestimate the amount of time that it is going to take you to get ready that morning so that you can make sure that you arrive at SOAR on time for the security check and bus loading. This way you can account for wardrobe mishaps, appointments extending longer than you expected, or hair and makeup not turning out the way you wanted and having time to fix it. This way you aren’t rushing against the clock to be ready for prom on time.

Ultimately, the experience of getting ready for prom should be a relaxing one and with the help of this list and proper planning you will be able to achieve your prom look without the stress.
