Let's show our appreciation

Updated: Feb 7

As we get ready to give thanks over the holiday season let's reflect on the different ways we can show our loved ones and friends how much we appreciate them.

Through a compliment

A simple compliment can make your loved ones feel nice. In fact, studies have shown that "receiving praise makes your brain react the way it would if you received a financial reward." The more specific and sincere you are, the more likely you are to have a greater impact.

Listening to them

Listening is one of the best ways to show gratitude. When you lend a good ear and listen with curiosity, attention, and compassion it is likely for your loved one to feel respected and valued. With listening , your relationship will deepen due to people gaining trust when they are able to share something with others.

Saying Thank You

Saying thank you can be easily overlooked, but a simple thank you note can go a long way. It is important to tell your loved one how much you appreciate them, and be specific about the things you are appreciative and passionate about.

Spending time with them

Spending quality time with your loved ones shows your appreciation. It is important to consider doing something they enjoy that might not be your favorite. At the very least, you will learn something new while making whoever it is very happy.

Be positive

Even when things are difficult, it helps a lot for those who are struggling to be around someone who is positive. Goodness can be very contagious! Wouldn't you rather spread positivity rather than negativity?

Give a gift

Giving gifts shows our loved ones that we appreciate the role they play in our lives. It doesn't have to be something big, it can be a handmade gift, or even some flowers. I know multiple people look past these acts, but they can truly make a difference.. Acts like these can make a person feel very warm and delighted.

There are many ways you can show your gratitude towards others. Just ask SOAR student Marym Habib, who says "it always feels good to feel appreciated, when someone shows you without you having to say anything is when it feels the most special."

So take these as some options to show some appreciation and make someone smile!
