Latino Knowledge Bowl

By Maria Montoya

Our soon to be school victors nervously crowded around a chromebook looking back and forth from the board to their smaller chromebook screen. On September 30th 2022 SOAR High School scored 2nd place at the Latino365 Knowledge Bowl at Eastside High School. Our competing SOAR students were Alex Galindo, Kaitlyn Morales, Andrew Arreola, Helen Alvizures Cruz, and Yahany Francisco. They began practicing for the knowledge bowl at the beginning of September for the competition. They started off practicing on Tuesday mornings then moved to practicing every Monday morning before school. To put it simply, at the first competition they had to go up against 6 teams from different schools, Quartz Hill HS, SOAR HS(Palmdale Campus), Antelope Valley HS, Desert Winds HS, East Side HS, and Lancaster HS. During their first competition there was a lot of excitement from supporters that someone had shouted if they could cheer and Jamal Brown responded with “You can cheer as loudly and as proudly as you like,” and so they did. When asked the parent of Yahany Francisco had proudly said “Vas a ver que si van a ganar” which means ‘You will see they will win’ and win they did. There was no doubt that these students wouldn’t do their best and in the end. all their practice and time spent was worth it. After the competition Alex Galindo commented “I felt some sort of relief because it was over and overall happy that we got 2nd in the competition. The entire experience was fun for me because I got to work with other students and I was very lucky to be a part of this amazing team.”
