Girls SOAR High began three years ago when SOAR ‘22 graduate, Rocio Rivera saw a need for girls on SOAR’s campus to have a safe space to come together and build a sense of community. The club has since been passed down to the new President Michelle Medina (Class of ‘23) who is passionate about sharing the club’s mission for the upcoming school year. Girls SOAR High has made it their focus to destigmatize women's health, hygiene, and safety through the usage of education and creating a safe space for women to share their experiences when seeking support. Women's reproductive and sexual health isn’t taught to the extent that it should be within the school system and Girls SOAR High aims to educate and promote female wellness in an attempt to destigmatize it and create access to necessary resources. Moreover, it is important to Girls SOAR High that people on campus have the necessary access to menstrual products that they need regardless of socioeconomic status and aim to make these products available. In terms of women’s safety here on campus and at AVC, particularly in light of recent events, it is important that students are educated on sexual harrasment, assault, and how to assess certain situations and interactions. If Girls SOAR Highs’ project and focus for the year aligns with your own values and passions consider joining the club. You can get involved by keeping up with their upcoming events through their google classroom whose code is : gsbnkli and attending meetings every Friday during lunch in S6. GSH is making a lasting impact on SOAR’s community by destigmatizing women's health, hygiene, and safety through education and creating a safe space for women within the SOAR community.
