We all wish for the new year to bring new things. You might even try some interesting superstitions. However, the new year has decided to bring us some other things. Recently the American Red Cross has announced that there's a national blood shortage. Coincidentally January is National Blood donor month as well.
The American Red Cross invites anyone and everyone to help with the cause. You must be at least 16 to donate blood. If you're 16 you must have parental consent. They need every single type of blood. Especially type O- since it's a universal donor. O- is also the rarest blood type.
The nation is facing the lowest number of people giving blood in 20 years. There are many ways you can help. With the American Red Cross, you can schedule an appointment to donate today. Even here in our very own school, there are opportunities. AVC is hosting a blood drive through the American Red Cross on January 24th in the student lounge. From 9 am-3 pm, you can be a part of the 40% of blood that the Red Cross provides to our nation. Future Medical Students is also hosting a blood drive for SOAR. On February 9th, 9 am-3 pm you can donate at the students lounge.
Columbia University has shared that regular blood donation is linked to lower blood pressure and a lower risk for heart attacks. One student Monica Muniz has said, “I actually want to start donating blood”. Her family happens to all be universal blood donors. Other students don't really know how they feel about donating and some are scared of needles. However, we should all consider donating if eligible. Become a blood donor today.
