Over the course of Disney history, straight couples are very predominant in almost every movie. Sure we’ve seen a lot of examples and slight hints at LGBTQ characters with movies like the real life version of “Beauty and the Beast” starring, as many say, the gay character LeFou. We’ve also seen possibly gay character such as “Ferdinand the Bull” in 1939, the bull who breaks the stereotypes of toxic masculinity and as many question, is the bull standing up against the stereotype of men or is he simply gay? Disney has, of course, been a huge supporter of LGBTQ+ rights and even casts gay people for their Disney Channel shows that they have such as the iconic show “Andi Mack.” Though recently, Disney is taking a step forward to LGBTQ+ recognition in their big movies.
LGBTQ+ fans, for a long time now, have been asking Disney for a gay prince, princess, or something for their big movies. To have recognition would just bring so much peace and allow gay and trans people to feel a bit more normal and loved in this world. For years, queer people have grown up seeing straight couples in Disney movies and as much as many gay people wanted to fantasize a life like that they believed that only straight couples can have that romantic relationship. Now, they ask for a LGBTQ icon in Disney, and recently they are now presented with a huge gift, the first same sex kiss scene in the Star Wars franchise! According to Director J.J Abrams, he said “And in the case of the LGBTQ community, it was important to me that people who go to see this movie feel that they’re being represented in the film.” And indeed that what this movie did, now with queer people happy and overfilled with joy about this scene they feel closer to being accepted in this world.
