Hi all, welcome back to our A Journey With Journey series! Currently we are in the month of March, meaning that we are just two months away from the end of the 2022-2023 school year! You know what that means, prepping for a move to your new college, preparing for new responsibilities, and best of all being that much closer to adulthood! These new endeavors might arouse different emotions ranging from excitement to fear for the future, or even a lovely mixture of both. Well, no matter where you might be on that spectrum of emotions, this piece will help you navigate preparing for your post high school years and dealing with any emotions that may arise as a result of facing these new endeavors! Without further ado, let’s dive right into some tips for addressing this new chapter in your lives!
Before we get into the tips it is important to know that whatever emotions you may be feeling as a result of having to prepare for this new journey into adulthood are completely normal and are to be expected. Maybe you are nervous about beginning this new journey in your life. Perhaps you are excited about exploring this newfound freedom. Or maybe you are completely lost and dumbfounded about what to do with this newfound independence that will be approaching you shortly. Whatever your feelings may be these tips on this list will be sure to help you address them as well as overall prepare! Now let’s take a look at some of these helpful tips!
First, recognize that this is a new chapter in your life, and that comes with a whirlwind of emotions. As mentioned before, coming into adulthood can be scary, exciting,or even confusing, but whatever you may be feeling it is important that you recognize and stay patient with yourself throughout dealing with those challenging emotions.
Next, it is important that you recognize that everyone’s path is different and that you may not end up in the same position as those around you. You may choose to go into a trade, travel during a gap year, or even join the military! The sky's the limit, so it is important to not limit yourself with what your life after high school might look like! It is important to remember that if you are happy and confident in the choices that you are making in addressing your post high school years,that is all that matters and you should not let the opinions of others sway from what you desire in your life.
And lastly, be sure to expose yourself to different things that might make your transition into adulthood a bit easier. When equipped with knowledge and a bit more experience you’ll be sure to take on the world as an adult! Check out some of our tips below!
Invest some of your time into becoming financially literate
Go on tours of different colleges (if that is what you are choosing!)
Navigate your new college campus/city before officially moving there
Pick up a new skill
Plan out a budget
Considering applying to a job in your new location
Take a self defense class
Wrap up some last minute goals that may be specific to your last few months in highschool
Make some last minute memories with friends and family!
