A Fresh Formula: Mr. Swafford Blends Passion for Chemistry and Teaching at SOAR

Last year, the SOAR family bid farewell to Mrs. Blanski, the long-time chemistry teacher who retired after an impressive 25 years of service. This year, a fresh face is taking over the chemistry lab — Mr. Swafford, an up-and-coming educator with six years of teaching experience, is stepping into the role with a passion that rivals even the most seasoned teachers.

Unlike some chemistry instructors who bring a quieter approach to the subject, Mr. Swafford brings a deep appreciation for his subject. His goal? To instill the same love for chemistry in his students that he possesses.

But Mr. Swafford isn’t just a teacher — like many educators, he balances a life outside of the classroom. Currently working toward his teaching credentials at California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB), he understands the student experience firsthand. He manages homework, instructors, and the balancing act that SOAR students know well.

Additionally, it wasn't too long ago that he was a student at Antelope Valley College before transferring to California State University, Northridge where he would earn his bachelor's degree in Chemistry.

With a busy schedule filled with teaching and studying, how does he unwind? For Mr. Swafford, it’s all about his hobbies. “I recently took up bread making,” he shares. “My goal this weekend is to make a baguette.” His love for chemistry extends beyond the classroom, often finding its way into his kitchen experiments.

After nearly two months at SOAR, students are already forming positive impressions of their new teacher. “He’s a good teacher, really chill and easy to understand,” says Ani Chizmichyan, echoing the sentiment of many of her classmates.

As the school year progresses, Mr. Swafford’s fresh approach has already made an impact. He leaves students with a final thought: “For all my gamers out there, clicker and turn-based games are my favorite.”
