5 Tips for Success in Online Classes

By: Morgan Carter

With the new semester beginning, many people are taking advantage of the opportunity to take online classes at AVC. Although we have all taken online classes at some point because of COVID, it can be difficult to balance both in person and online classes in addition to balancing both college and high school. All while trying to maintain a social life. Here’s what I’d suggest to realistically take away some of the stress that comes with taking an online college class for the first time:

  • Check both Canvas and your college emails frequently

    • Staying up to date with announcements and knowing what your professors expect and what is required is important for your success in an online course.

  • Keep track of when assignments are due

    • Whether you use something physical like a planner or something digital like the notes app or calendar app, it is important to make note of when assignments were assigned and when they are due so you know how much time you have to complete your assignments.

  • Completing assignments as soon as possible

    • Using freetime to complete part or all of your assignments for a class as soon as you have it can help prevent procrastination. Alternatively, you can set aside specific days to complete all of your assigned work for a specific class which helps to pace your work load and combat any overwhelming feelings that may arise from the thought of all of the work that you need to complete.

  • Connect with your professors

    • Do not hesitate to ask questions and attend office hours when you need clarity on assignments or what is required of you to succeed in the course. It is always better to be safe than sorry and oftentimes professors appreciate when their students demonstrate interest in succeeding in their class.

  • Create a Healthy Work Life Balance

    • This advice goes for both online and in person classes however, setting aside at least one day every week that you don’t do any schoolwork and focus on a hobby or spending time with friends can make the workload of school much lighter and encourages you to enjoy your life and explore your identity outside of being a student.

I hope that some, or all of these tips help to ease the stress of school this year and allow for you to enjoy and make the most of your time spent in high school. With that being said I hope you all have a great second semester!
